Psychedelia
Visual category: Psychedelia
Classic psychedelic album covers are traditionally associated with the “hippy” bands of the 1960s, but psychedelic imagery actually has its roots in the Art Nouveau movement of nearly 100 years earlier.
The ’60s psychedelic aesthetic borrowed from the flowy, organic lines of Art Nouveau, and amped them up with intense, high-contrast colors said to make your eyes vibrate. This was an effort to visually convey the experience of an LSD or mushroom trip.
Pschedelic art is alive and well today, as in the example here of “Transcension,” by artist Cameron Gray. Musical artists still look to psychedelia.for eye-catching album covers.
